About Brown Girl in the Room:
Sara Ramnarine is just starting out her career in Toronto, a city touted as one of the most cosmopolitan in the world, with its motto, ‘Diversity is our strength.’ As a smart, driven, educated contemporary woman, Sara hopes her rise up the corporate ladder will be seamless. But she soon discovers that the workplace is full of pitfalls and obstructions, including racism and discrimination. Eventually, Sara is forced to make a critical decision that affects her career and state of mind, risking her reputation for years to come.
Advance Praise for Brown Girl in the Room:
"Through a compelling and vividly drawn cast, Brown Girl in the Room sees Ramsingh explore the opportunities and limitations of workplace diversity, the microaggressions faced by racialized employees, and the consequences that ripple outward from them. Ramsingh approaches these difficult themes with skill, nuance and sensitivity. I was completely invested and could not put this book down.
Brown Girl in the Room had me nodding in recognition, laughing quietly at its sharp observations, and occasionally pausing in surprise. Ramsingh's debut is an excellent contribution to contemporary Canlit and this second edition is welcome and necessary. Highly recommend. Sharp. Insightful. Utterly compelling."
-       Salma Hussain, YA author of The Secret Diary of Mona Hasan and It's Not Over Yet
"Ramsingh cuts to the quick in this bracingly honest portrait of life as a brown-skinned professional navigating her way in the corporate world. Refusing to flatten her characters into politically correct stereotypes, she explores identity bias, inherent colorism and racism, and the petty power plays of office politics in a way that’s never polemic but always deeply humane. At a time when DEI faces renewed scrutiny, this novel feels not only timely, but essential."
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Diane Bracuk, author of Middle-Aged Boys & Girls
"Priya Ramsingh peels away the slick corporate curtain to reveal the hypocrisy and cruelty of bureaucratic work culture. With a cast of complex, multidimensional characters and a relatable heroine who finds herself up against the double glass ceiling of racism and misogyny, Brown Girl in the Room is essential reading for our times."
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Heather Babcock, author of Filthy Sugar and The Memory of Crows
Â
"Priya Ramsingh's Brown Girl in the Room is a nuanced and insightful account of what it means to be a first-generation Canadian woman within a ruthless corporate environment. Fearless and direct, Ramsingh presents her protagonist, Sara, as well as her friends and colleagues with an equal mix of compassion and critique, exposing racism, misogyny and all of their consequences. An engaging and powerful debut."
- Danila Botha, Winner of the Independent Press Award for A Place for People Like Us, and author of the Trillium Award nominated book, For All of the Men and Some of the Women I’ve Loved.
