Curiosity by Bill Brown

Curiosity
I walk at dawn the forest trail,
I cherish time alone
to be with nature as it wakes,
it’s here I feel at home.
I listen to the voice of birds
sing greetings to the day,
expressing joy without words,
a melodic passion play.
A woodpecker knocks upon a tree
inviting bugs to dine,
busy bees bask in smelling sprees,
sniffing morning glory vines.
I crouch to watch a caterpillar
slowly cross my path,
she may be slow but one day will fly.
I take delight in that
In this place so rich with magic
I ponder as I wander.
What surprises are hidden, what don’t I know.
I walk. I wish. I wonder.
A flash of colour caught my eye
and in front of me did hover
a green and purple dragonfly.
We spoke to one another.
I didn’t think it strange at all
I bowed and said thank you.
To speak with nature when it calls,
it was a dream come true
She said she had been watching me
and though wary of mankind
she sensed in me a difference,
and knew that I was kind
She led thru grasses sparkled with dew,
fluttering butterflies joined in,
they dazzled the way with wings bejeweled
singing “let the stories begin.”
So off we went along the trail,
I followed where they flew
and listened to them tell their tales
which I will share with you
I learned:
Beehives thrive with only queens,
they have no need for kings.
I heard what makes wasps so mean,
and that birds teach toads to sing.
Speaking of toads, they want you to know
that warts are beauty spots.
They get glammed up whenever they go
to the Toad Wart Beauty shop.
On the first night of spring, summer and fall
Animals have season tickets.
They dance and bop at the bunny hop
to the music of fiddling crickets.
Trees stay in one place all their lives
so to stay in touch with each other,
they use root networks to keep close ties
sending best wishes undercover.
When ants get tired from working all day
they hitch rides on the backs of snails,
it may be slow but gives them time
for sipping beetle juice cocktails.
Like all things with wings, away the dragonfly flew,
biding me good days and good walks,
as well as a message I’ll share with you.
It was her final thought.
She said,
All of nature is a magical host
if you only take time to see.
It’s not where you wander that matters most,
It’s your curiosity.
