About Leaning in the same direction:
Leaning in the same direction is a poetic portrait of the people and places that make Canada a proud nation. From Toronto's subways to Nova Scotia's coast, it is a collection of poetry focused on the Canadian experience intended to unite people as much as poetry can. Leaning in the same direction looks at Canada and Canadians from a poet's point of view during difficult times.Â
Advance Praise for Leaning in the same direction:
"Bill’s poems happen right here, and through them, you find yourself right there. Be it on a streetcar, an airplane, by the ocean in Nova Scotia or in a Toronto balcony, he coaxes the reader into the aliveness of the moment, pointing out the magical in the undertow of the real. Bill’s second collection is a journey, station by station, through moments observed, examined and then stitched together in poems till they form a succinct story of an abundant life. His charming and often surprising imagery conveys a sense of beauty and harmony in everything around us."
—Ain Khan, poet, essayist, CBC contributor

"Incredible mystery lurks inside each of these everyday moments of observation and understanding, even if he wants us to believe he understands nothing. Don’t believe him. His is a nourishing prophecy that we have the pleasure to return to whenever we feel depleted. He swears he’s not a healer, but his poems have fixed me time and again."Â
—Christopher Goodrich, author of No Texting at the Dinner Table & Nevertheless, Hello
Â
"Leaning in the same direction provides a journey that generously and genuinely elevates through every heartache. Garvey writes, as if every day isn’t worth begging for more. Standing by the side of the road wishing he could embrace life, we soon find that he succeeds as he whispers to his granddaughter, It’s all absolutely full of wonder.
From Newbury Street to the rushing ruckus at Bloor-Yonge Station, from a priest’s abuse to a brother’s suicide, in all its excess and yet always with spareness, these poems are filled with joy, loss, love and tenderness."
—Howie Faerstein, author of Dreaming of the Rain in Brooklyn, Googootz, & Stay
Â
"As a composer, I have had the pleasure of setting a few of Bill Garvey’s poems to music. What draws me to his work is the fluidity, simplicity of text and fearless honesty with which he describes his outer and inner worlds. These qualities continue to delight in Bill’s latest collection, Leaning in the same direction."
—Michael Rose, Composer
About Bill Garvey:
Bill Garvey grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. His career moved him from Massachusetts to New Hampshire and Illinois. In 2010, he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia and founded Eastern Shore Consulting. Since retiring, Bill has dedicated himself to writing poetry. His work has been published in many journals including The Queen’s Quarterly, The New Quarterly, Cimarron Review, Rattle and others. Leaning in the same direction is Bill’s second (and a half) collection of poetry. He and Jean divide their time between the coast of Nova Scotia and the city of Toronto where their son, daughter and grandchildren live. Bill’s oldest granddaughter recently persuaded him (a diehard Red Sox fan) to root for the Blue Jays.    Â
