DarkWinter Press is excited to announce our latest release, the poetry collection Vigils of the Night Office by Paul Edward Costa, available now on Amazon in paperback and e-version for Kindle! You can buy it here!
About Vigils of the Night Office:
The title Vigils of the Night Office comes from The Rule of St. Benedict, a book which outlines the duties for Benedictine monks. Documents describe the vigils of the Night Office as such: “The Office at night, right before dawn is a very ancient monastic prayer time…with the goal of breaking up the night and sanctifying those hours.” This collection evokes the idea of poems as private prayers speaking to both individual experiences as well as more general cultural themes. These vigils reflect on a variety of subjects using accessible, narrative forms which emphasise speech’s musicality while investigating large, powerful, and nefarious structures in our society.
Advance Praise for Vigils of the Night Office:
"Vigils of the Night Office is an overflowing cornucopia of poetry that delves deep into Paul Edward Costa’s most passionate themes: power, bureaucracy, the search for meaning, and the elusive nature of redemption and love. Costa is a master of metaphor, erecting poetry from Frankenstein experiments, from architectural blueprints, from interdepartmental memos. The startling variety of poetic forms, the wicked humour, the thoughtful journeys he takes us on all make this an intriguing and invigorating collection."
-J. Marshall Freeman, Poet and Novelist
Author of the poetry chapbooks Arthropoda and small machines longing to be understood and the fiction works The Dubious Gift of Dragon Blood and Barnabas Bopwright Saves the City.
