Autumn Haiku by Joshua St. Claire

Autumn Haiku

all there is inside the burr three perfect chestnuts

arthritic hands

wringing each other

olive trees

slanting sunlight

a bumblebee returns

to the goldenrod

how much longer?

                                  yellow mulberry

roadkill buck

three black vultures disemboweling

the mackerel sky

keeping the rain

from the Chesapeake

muscadines

red pines growing from the barren they make deepening rain

caput mortuum

autumn dusk

won’t give up the light

a red cedar

clinging to a rock

clinging to a rock

valerian dusk clouds everything in black
