Rubber Boots by Ava Murray

Rubber Boots

we used to run and laugh together,

catching frogs and snakes with our hands.

you helped me pull my rubber boots on

when it rained the night before.

you were taller than me,

and we understood each other.

we used to listen to your favourite music

and paint our nails to match.

you let me look through your closet,

and borrow whatever fit me.

you were cooler than me,

and i was catching up in height.

we used to close our bedroom doors,

and try to ignore the thunder.

it was loud and angry and coming from our kitchen.

you would say you’re too busy now

to do childish things.

we could no longer trust each other.

we used to go months without texting.

you lived hours away.

i wondered if you thought about me,

about my little rubber boots

about the snakes and the frogs

because i think about it, very often i think about it.

you are my big sister

and i miss you terribly.

i hope that you ache as i do.
